The Perfect Long Weekend on California’s Central Coast: San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles & Pismo Beach Itinerary

This Memorial Day weekend officially checked another California bucket list trip off our list ✨ My parents flew out to visit us, and we decided to spend the long weekend exploring California’s Central Coast for the first time together — from San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles wine country to Pismo Beach and Santa Barbara.

It ended up being the perfect mix of wine tasting, beach towns, amazing food, scenic drives, and slower moments that made the weekend feel so refreshing.

Friday: Arriving in San Luis Obispo + Madonna Inn Dinner

We started the weekend by picking my parents up from the Santa Barbara airport before driving up the coast to San Luis Obispo. The drive itself was beautiful and set the tone for the entire weekend.

Once we got into SLO, we grabbed lunch at Firestone Grill and got the famous tri tip sandwiches before walking around downtown, Mission Plaza, and (of course) making a quick stop at Bubblegum Alley… which is exactly as gross as everyone says it is.

After checking into our Airbnb and relaxing, we headed to the iconic Madonna Inn for drinks before dinner. If you’ve never been, it honestly feels like stepping into another universe — pink everything, maximalist décor, and the most over-the-top charm in the best way possible. I heard the food was mediocre, so we wanted to do dinner somewhere else.

Dinner that night was at NOVO, which ended up being one of our favorite meals of the trip. The restaurant sits right on a gorgeous creek and bridge. It was such a nice start to our trip.

Saturday: Paso Robles Wine Tasting Day

Saturday was dedicated entirely to wine tasting in Paso Robles, and it might have been my favorite day of the trip.

Our first stop was Tablas Creek Vineyard, which had such a relaxed and beautiful atmosphere. We started with lighter Rhône-style wines and spent time walking around the property before heading deeper into wine country.

Next was Denner Vineyards, which had some of the prettiest rolling vineyard views of the entire trip. The vibe there felt intimate and peaceful, and it was the perfect place to slow down and enjoy lunch overlooking the vineyards.

We finished the day at DAOU Vineyards, which absolutely lived up to the hype. The drive up the hillside alone was stunning, and the panoramic views from the terrace were unreal. It felt like the perfect “grand finale” winery for the day. This was hands down the prettiest winery I have ever been do. They handed us rose when we walked in which I loved before we got into their famous red wines.

Before heading back to San Luis Obispo, we stopped in downtown Paso Robles for dinner at Buona Tavola, walked around town a bit, and ended the night at the hidden speakeasy called Eleven Twenty Two inside Pappy McGregor’s. It was such a fun unexpected way to end the wine tasting day and honestly gave the whole night a cozy, old-school vibe.

We hired a private transportation service at Central Coast Transportation that was much needed for the three wine tastings we did!

Sunday: Oceano Dunes, Pismo Beach & E-Biking to Avila Beach

Sunday was probably our most active day of the trip, and one of the most fun.

We started the morning at Oceano Dunes, which honestly looked surreal in person. The giant sand dunes felt like something completely different from the California beach towns we’re used to. We walked up a few hills to see the beautiful coastline views, it was worth it. Make sure to follow these parking instructions: Park at pacific dunes ranch and RV resort, walk from there. Make sure you park in the gravel parking lot outside the RV resort otherwise they will tow you. It will be near a horseback riding place and a basketball hoop.

From there, we headed into Pismo Beach for lunch at Splash Café and had their famous clam chowder before renting e-bikes from Pedal Up. Riding e-bikes along the coast ended up being one of the highlights of the entire weekend. The bikes were so easy to use and the owners showed us a map with the best spots to go to.

We stopped through Shell Beach, Dinosaur Caves Park, Bob Jones Trail and eventually made our way to Avila Beach before turning around and riding back along the coast. It was the perfect way to see the area because we got to stop wherever we wanted, take photos, and enjoy the ocean views the entire ride. Avila Beach gave me all the east coast vibes and it was the cutest beach town. We walked around here for a bit and popped in to grab a snack at one of the many places along the beach.

That night, we headed back to San Luis Obispo for dinner at Mistura before spending one last evening together in town.

Monday: Slow Morning in Santa Barbara

Before heading home, we grabbed breakfast and coffee at Breakfast Buzz in San Luis Obispo before driving back down to Santa Barbara.

We spent our final morning walking around State Street, grabbing coffee in the Funk Zone, and soaking in a few last coastal views before dropping my parents back off at the airport.

It honestly felt like the perfect ending to such a fun and memorable weekend.

Final Thoughts

This trip reminded me why I love California so much — every few hours feels like a completely different destination. Between the wine country views, beach towns, amazing restaurants, and slower pace, this Central Coast weekend was exactly what we needed.

If you’re looking for a long weekend itinerary that mixes wine tasting, coastal towns, good food, and scenic drives, I genuinely couldn’t recommend this route more ✨
